Overview

Some times, the best learning occurs outside of the classroom. There are opportunities all around to connect real-world experiences with content. Acres of Adventure at Pickwick Place has designed one such opportunity, and we would like to extend an invitation to you and your colleagues to enjoy our fall field trip program.

Our field trip program has been designed by educators who realize the importance of field trips being well organized, highly educational, and most importantly, exciting and engaging for your students. A field trip at Acres of Adventure includes the following: a trip through our eight-acre corn maze, a 25-minute lesson aligned to current content standards, a take-home pumpkin for each student, and time at our agricultural learning stations. All of this is just $6 a participant; school employees receive complementary admission.

Teachers can expect to meet these content statements during their time at Acres of Adventure:
1. The way basic human needs are met has changed over time.
2. Maps can be used to locate and identify places.
3. People produce and consume goods and services in the community.
4. Living things have basic needs, which are met by obtaining materials from the physical environment.
5. Living things survive only in environments that meet their needs.

Our program is appropriate and can be adapted for any grade level, but our target audience is first grade. Our schedule fills up fast. Don’t miss your opportunity to bring your class to the farm this fall! Click here to submit a field trip request.

The Exploding Cheeseburger

When asked where their food comes from, many students will answer a grocery store. Young children, and even adults, don’t always make the connection between farmers and the food they eat. Yet, today, one farmer grows enough food in a year to feed 155 people worldwide, and that number continues to grow. In addition to farmers, 24 million American workers are involved in the agricultural industry, in jobs like harvesting, transporting, processing, and selling. It is important for students to understand that grocery stores are a way to distribute food, but they are not the source of food. During your field trip, students will participate in a 25-minute lesson, titled The Exploding Cheeseburger, which will help provide students with an understanding of where food comes from and what it takes to produce the food. It will place an emphasis on the importance of farmers and how they meet everyone’s basic need for food. It will discuss where in the country popular foods are grown and define the key terms “producer” and “consumer.” This lesson will help students understand the connection between the land, farmers, food, and the grocery store. All field trips are aligned with current Ohio content standards. A chart outlining the content alignment is available upon request.

What should we expect?

Parking and Arrival: A successful trip starts long before you leave school. We will communicate with you in advance and answer all of your questions. Then, when you arrive, our staff will greet your bus or other vehicles. We will provide parking instructions and let you know what to expect. We offer fully handicap accessible restrooms on site. In addition, there is a hand washing sink, which can accommodate several students at a time.

Suggested Clothing: All field trips will be held rain or shine. Encourage your students to dress for the weather and to wear closed- toe shoes. Because of other scheduled events at Acres of Adventure, no field trips can be rescheduled.

Schedule: Please have your students divided into no more than four small groups when you arrive. Each group will be assigned a color which correlates to a rotational schedule. Field trip programs last for two hours. Groups are welcome to bring lunch and enjoy our picnic area and playground under teacher supervision.
